Doris Edem Agbevivi

Project Coordinator, Drive Electric Initiative Ghana (DEI-Gh)

Doris is an Energy Analyst in Emerging Technologies and a Yale Climate fellow with years of experience in clean energy and sustainable development in Ghana and internationally. Her areas of expertise and experience include mainstreaming and promoting sustainable energy and transport initiatives, research, auditing, emerging technologies, planning and policy. She has spent the past seven years with the Energy Commission working closely with energy sector stakeholders and informing policymaking in Ghana. Doris has also participated in and led technical knowledge exchange events in Ghana and abroad. She consulted for the WHO’s Urban Health Initiative to analyse the impact of various cooking fuels on health. She is currently the coordinator of the Drive Electric Initiative in Ghana; an e-mobility initiative of the Energy Commission aimed at driving the productive use of electricity while ushering in an era of green and sustainable energy use. Under this initiative, she organised Ghana’s first e-mobility conference and exhibition to bring together major stakeholders, exhibit electric vehicles and to raise public awareness. She also organised Ghana’s first public charging forum aimed at training stakeholders on public charging while also working with relevant stakeholders to develop standards and regulations for EV charging in Ghana. 

Sarah Naa Dedei Agbey

Deputy Country Director SNV-Ghana

Sarah Naa Dedei Agbey, an experienced development practitioner with over 25 years’ expertise in Planning, Organisational Development and Good Governance. She joined SNV-Ghana in November 2005 as an advisor and rose to the level of Deputy Country Director in 2017. Sarah is a Development Planner by profession with M.Sc. in Regional Planning and Management from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and University of Dortmund (Germany). She also has training in Biodiversity Planning and Natural Resources Management, Renewable Energy, Climate change, Clean Development Mechanism, Sustainable livelihood Framework, Environmental Impact Assessment, Organisation and Systems Development and Good Governance. She recently got a professional Certificate in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and Theology.

M'hamed el Aisati

Vice President of Product Management Analytical and Data Services, Elsevier

M'hamed el Aisati is Vice President of Product Management Analytical and Data Services, at Elsevier. He holds an MSc in Computer Sciences from the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. After joining Elsevier in 1998, M'hamed contributed to the realization of the first Elsevier digital journals platform preceding ScienceDirect, and later in 2004, stood at the cradle of Scopus, which he helped launch. He now leads a data and analytics team supporting large research performance evaluation programs, and applying analytical tools in large-scale projects that aim to provide insights to research institutions, governments and funding agencies to help them develop strategies for improving funding allocation and demonstrating impact. M’hamed is also a university ranking expert being Elsevier’s antenna working directly with ranking providers such as THE and QS. M’hamed holds two patents and specializes in product development, big data, analytics, and service-oriented architecture.

Mavis Akuffobea-Essilfie

Senior Research Scientist at Science and Technology Policy Research Institute (STEPRI) of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Ghana.

Mavis is a Sociologist with a PhD and M.Phil. in Sociology from the University of Ghana, Legon. She is experienced in policy and gender sensitive research.  Previously she worked as a policy advisor to engage policy makers on equity issues in sustainable Agriculture Intensification in Ghana. She was also a Gender Specialist and Principal Investigator on a gender and climate change impact case study in Ashanti Akyem Agogo, Ghana. She is a co-investigator of the IDRC Breaking Barriers research project on women in STEM education and careers in Ghana and Benin. She is also part of a research team investigating whether addressing gender inequalities and empowering women improve development program outcomes. She has had the opportunity to work or collaborate with reputable institutions such as Oxford University, SINTEF-Norway, The New partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU). She co-organizes conferences and workshops as well as co-facilitates training workshops.  

Zakari Ali

Zakari Ali is a Research Fellow at the MRC Unit The Gambia at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), The Gambia. He works on the Lancet Countdown Commission on Health and Climate Change funded by Wellcome Trust (UK). Clean energy transition in Africa will have enormous positive health and environmental benefits and hence is a key priority area for the Lancet Countdown work focused on Africa. In this panel, Zakari will emphasis the need for Equity in energy systems and health and in planetary health education in Africa.

Kehkashan Basu, M.S.M. is an influencer, educator, environmentalist, champion of women and children’s rights, TEDx speaker, Climate Reality Mentor, author, musician, peace and sustainability campaigner. She is the recipient of Canada's Meritorious Service Medal and the only Canadian to win the International Children’s Peace Prize. A Forbes 30 Under 30 and the first-ever Winner of the Voices Youth Gorbachev-Schultz Legacy Award for her work on nuclear disarmament, Kehkashan is a United Nations Human Rights Champion, a National Geographic Young Explorer, a UN Habitat Young City Champion, a UNCCD Land Hero, the Regional Organizing Partner for North America for the NGO Major Group and one of Canada's Top25 Women of Influence. Kehkashan is the Founder-President of global social innovation enterprise Green Hope Foundation, that works at a grassroots level in 28 countries, empowering over 500,000 young people and women, especially those from vulnerable communities, in the sustainable development process. Tommaso Ciarli

Tommaso Ciarli is Senior Researcher at UNU-MERIT, United Nations University, and SPRU, University of Sussex. He studies the relations between science, technology, and innovation and sustainable development. He has lead projects on: modelling economic development, structural change and inequality; modelling sustainable transitions; analysing the relation between science and innovation trajectories, and sustainable development challenges; estimating the impact of innovation on employment and inequality; and estimating the impact of violent conflict on economic activity. Prof. Emanuela Colombo, PhD – Emanuela Colombo has achieved both a PhD in Energetics and a Nuclear Engineering MSc at Politecnico di Milano in Italy where she is currently Full Professor at the Department of Energy. She has covered the role of Rector’s Delegate to Cooperation and Development since 2005 and since 2023 she has been covering the role of Rector’s Delegate for Science Diplomacy at Politecnico di Milano. She is currently and has been the scientific coordinator / partner of several International projects: LEAPRE and PRE-LEAP H2020 (Africa), Green Innovation (Egypt), Sustainable Energy Engineering (Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia), Water Energy and Food nexus (Egypt), Modern Energy services in refugee camps (Lebanon, Somalia, RCA and Colombia) and Capacity Building in Engineering (Tanzania). She is author of more than 200 scientific papers presented in national and international conferences and published in international journals and coauthor of the book “Renewable Energy for Unleashing Sustainable Development” Springer International Publishing Switzerland. Since 2007 she has been coordinator of a Network of 29 Universities focused on Cooperation and Development (CUCS). In 2012 she became Chair holder of the UNESCO CHAIR on Energy for Sustainable Development assigned to the Department of Energy. In 2016 she was nominated Academic representative by the Italian Conference of the Rector (CRUI) within the National Council for Cooperation and Development established by the new Law 125 on cooperationShe is adjunct professor at the Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology in Arusha. From 2020 she is an elected member of the Academic Senate of Politecnico di Milano.

Mawuena Akosua Cudjoe

Dr. Mawuena Akosua Cudjoe is a Lecturer at the Accounting Department, University of Ghana Business School with almost a decade’s experience in research. She also has industry knowledge which was obtained through her work in a bank. Dr Rocio A Diaz-Chavez has a BSc in Biology/Ecology in Mexico and holds a PhD on Sustainable Development Indicators from the University of Wales Aberystwyth in the UK.
She has been a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Environmental Policy of Imperial College London since 2004. She acted as Deputy Director and Energy and Climate Change Programme Leader at the Stockholm Environment Institute Africa Centre from 2017 to 2022. Among other projects she co-coordinated the project “Bioenergy Strategy for East Africa” (BISEA). Her research interests are on sustainability assessment and deployment of bioeconomy, bioenergy, land use and natural resources, socio-economic assessment and governance, climate change impacts, transport and agriculture

Kathleen Flynn-Dapaah

Kathleen began her career at Canada’s International Development Research Centre in 1999 where she focused on integrating gender equality into various sectors including natural resource management, health and information and communication technologies for Development. She joined CIDA in 2013 as the Team Leader for Education Specialists in the Geographic Programs Branch. During her time at headquarters she was the director of Education, Gender-Based Violence and Child Protection from 2020 to 2022 and deputy director of Gender-Based Violence and Child Protection from 2014-2020. Prior to joining the Department, she worked as a Senior Policy Manager for First Nation Education Policy at Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (2009-2012). From September 1999 to March 2000, she was a Research Affiliate with the University of Ghana where she undertook field research on women's land rights in the peri-urban area of Accra. Lesego Gaegane

Lesego Gaegane is a Sustainability professional with a Chemical Engineering background. She has 15 years of working experience in all sectors of the Industrial Policy Action Pan. Lesego has implemented strategic energy management and water efficiency projects over the past 13 years. Her role included driving policy change within private companies to enable them to have sustainable development principles and practices. Lesego is a member of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), a member of the International Water Association (IWA), a member of the Society for Ecological Restoration, a member of the Global Women's Network for the Energy Transition Women in Energy Expert Platform and member of the Circular Economy Club. She has been a member of the Southern African Energy Efficiency Confederation (SAEEC) for the past 12 years. She is currently a board member of the South African Females in Energy Efficiency (SAFEE). Lesego is committed to improving processes to maintain efficiency and productivity for sustainable practices in the industry.  She has a strong passion for mentorship to develop and capacitate young professionals.

Celia García-Baños

Programme Officer - Policy, Gender and Socioeconomics in IRENA’s Knowledge Policy and Finance Centre in Abu Dhabi

Celia is a chemical engineer from the Industrial Engineering School of the Technical University of Madrid. She holds a masters in Water and Environmental Engineering from Masdar Institute. Within IRENA’s Policy Unit, she works on a diverse range of subjects, in topics related to policy assessment and socio-economic impacts of renewable energy, including jobs and gender. In this regard, Celia’s efforts focus on producing up-to-date and authoritative renewable energy data and on identifying best practice within the renewable energy sector to achieve an inclusive global energy transition. 

Jiska de Groot

Energy and development geographer based at the University of Cape Town’s African Climate and Development Initiative

Jiska is an energy and development geographer based at the University of Cape Town’s African Climate and Development Initiative. She holds a PhD in Human Geography focused on renewable energy and stakeholder engagement, an MSc in International Development Studies and a MA in Cultural Anthropology. In her current position as Senior Researcher at the University of Cape Town, her work focuses on the human dimension of sustainable energy access, energy poverty, gender and capacity building. She has a strong interest in conducting research that is policy-and practice-relevant with a focus on achieving local development benefits, whilst assisting with local change processes. Jiska leads the research support programme of the FCDO-funded Transforming Energy Access Programme, and provides Gender and social inclusion support to a range of international energy and climate change programmes, including for the UN, InnovateUK and the Forest Stewardship Council.

Professor Raphael Heffron is Professor in Energy Justice, the Social Contract and Sustainability at the Universite de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour, Pau, France. He is also Jean Monnet Professor in the Just Transition to a Low-Carbon Economy and Senior Counsel at Janson in Brussels (Belgium). Professor Heffron is a qualified Barrister-at-Law, and a graduate of both Oxford (MSc-Christ Church) and Cambridge (MPhil-Darwin & PhD-Trinity Hall). His work all has a principal focus on achieving a sustainable and just transition to a low-carbon economy, and combines a mix of law, policy and economics.

Rosemary Idem

Rosemary Idem is the Programme Manager, Women and Youth at the Forefront at Sustainable Energy for All, where she is responsible for leading efforts on removing current barriers to women and youth participation in the clean energy workforce; and in identifying, supporting, and championing the next generation of women and youth energy leaders to close the energy access gap and ensure no one is left behind. Prior to her role at SEforALL, she worked in the Nigerian Rural Electrification Agency, where she supported the design and implementation of the Nigerian off-grid electrification programme and Nigeria Electrification Project- a $550m Facility to rapidly increase and develop solar mini grids and deploy solar home systems across the country. Her previous experience also includes working in the Presidential Task Force on Power as part of the team that designed and implemented the Nigerian Energy Sector Reform.

Abhishek built and leads The Council’s practices on energy access, rural livelihoods, and sustainable food systems. He is directing 'Powering Livelihoods', a $3 million initiative to transform India's rural economy with clean energy solutions. He co-conceptualised and leads CEEW’s flagship research effort, Access to Clean Cooking Energy and Electricity – Survey of States (ACCESS), the largest panel survey on multidimensional energy access in India. In over nine years of experience, Abhishek has focused on various issues including decentralised renewable energy, energy access, LPG for cooking, fossil fuel subsidies, power sector, rural livelihoods, and sustainable agriculture.

Laura Jalasjoki is the Country Representative of GGGI in Burkina Faso. In her position she provides strategic advice on green growth and climate policies to the government and national stakeholders. She coordinated the process to establish the country’s long-term low carbon development strategy in 2021-2022.  She has worked as lead analyst on green economy at the European Network for Rural Development, helping European national administrations implement climate neutral rural projects. Previously she has a long experience of capacity building of farmers’ organisations in developing countries at the AgriCord network and at the International Fund for Agricultural Development.

Tog-Noma Patricia Emma KABORE/ BONTOGHO obtained her PhD in Climate change and Water resources from the University of Abomey Calavy, Benin. She is currently an associate professor of Environment at the University of Fada N’ Gourma. She did her Master in Integrated Water Resource Management (2iE) and her Bachelor in Microbiology (University of Ouagadougou). Her primary research interests are in Modelling water allocation under human pressure and climate change. Her other research interests include climate smart agricultures practices and risks /opportunities of wetlands face to climate change, droughts and floods monitoring. She has ten publications in refereed journals.

Nana Ama Browne Klutse

Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse is currently an AIMS-Canada Research Chair in Climate Change Science. The project she is embarking on is focused on understanding the climate dynamics of Africa, climate observations and projections for climate services. She is an Associate Professor at the Department of Physics, University of Ghana. She was a senior research scientist at the Ghana Space Science and Technology Institute of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission as well as the manager of the remote sensing and Climate Center at the Institute.  Prof. Browne Klutse holds a PhD in Climatology from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. Her research focuses generally on atmospheric physics and particularly on climate dynamics, modelling, climate impact assessments.

Ing. Dr. Mrs. Enyonam Kpekpena, is an electrical engineer with over twenty years extensive experience in the fields of telecommunications, networking, Information Technology and Project Management. She has distinguished yourself as a practicing professional and academic. She is currently the manager in charge of IT Projects Delivery and the Programme Management Office Lead for the ECG Financial and Operational Turnaround (EFOT) projects at the Electricity Company of Ghana Limited. As a practicing professional, she has successfully led the planning and implementation of major ECG and donor- funded projects within the power distribution sector. Her hard work and selfless dedication to duty in her capacity as EFOT PMO Lead led to the establishment of standardized Project Management structures and the recognition of ECG as a center of excellence for its 2021 Award Winning Project Management Excellence Project of the Year (The Pokuase BSP Project) and Runner up for the 2022 Project Management Excellence PMO of the Year .

In recent years, Deborah has focused on introducing a strong inclusion and diversity commitment across the portfolio; building networks and partnerships with researchers in the Global South; and championing a focus on content and activities around the clean energy transition.  Deborah is based in Paris and has been working with Elsevier since 2006. Before then, she worked at Oxford University Press in UK; at a non-governmental agency in Kenya; with the Japanese Ministry of Education; and at Sony in Japan. Deborah’s passions lie in raising standards, championing excellence, and promoting greater diversity in science. 

Ingrid Lynch

Principal Investigator (PI) for the SGCI-2 Gender Equality and Inclusivity Project, Human Sciences Research Council, South Africa

Dr Ingrid Lynch is a Senior Research Specialist at the Human Sciences Research Council in South Africa. She employs participatory, qualitative methodologies to examine two inter-related areas of interest: socio-cultural determinants of health and rights, and the interface between knowledge production and intersectional gender transformation. She holds extensive expertise in critical policy analysis and evidence synthesis. She was PI of a recently completed study funded by the National Research Foundation (NRF) and the German Research Foundation (DFG) titled ‘Intersectional research, grant-making and human capital development: Considerations for public funding agencies in advancing equality, diversity and inclusion’. She is currently PI of a project funded by ICARS and IDRC titled ‘Strengthening gender equality and social inclusion in LMICs across the antimicrobial intervention and implementation research continuum’. She is the PI of the current SGCI-2 Gender and Equality and Inclusivity Project, aimed at strengthening the capacities of Science Granting Councils in sub-Saharan Africa to advance systemic change towards gender transformation in the science, technology, and innovation sector. She serves as Chairperson of the NRF South Africa Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in the Research Enterprise Reference Group and is a research fellow in the Critical Studies in Sexualities and Reproduction programme at Rhodes University.

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and German language and a Master’s Degree in Gender and Development Studies from the University of Nairobi, Kenya. Dorothy Ngila

Dr Dorothy Ngila advances her career at South Africa’s National Research Foundation (NRF) as a director in the Strategic Partnerships division. Her core responsibility is to coordinate the NRF’s contribution to the multi-stakeholder and multi-agency capacity strengthening programme, the Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI) in sub-Saharan Africa, which partners with 17 public science granting councils in East, West, and Southern Africa, and to advance the NRF’s engagement in knowledge networks. She is interested in institutional capacity strengthening in Africa (with a focus on science) and integrating gender and intersectionality (with a focus on women) in science. Dr Ngila serves on the Advisory Board of the Alliance for African Partnership (AAP) and the Global Research Council (GRC) Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Working Group. She is the immediate past chair of the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) South African National Chapter. She served on the Uganda National Academy of Sciences (UNAS) consensus study panel on inclusion and equity for national development in Uganda; and the Gendered Innovations Global Advisory Board to evaluate funding agencies for their policies on sex, gender, and intersectional/diversity analysis across seven continents.

Finally, she represents the Africa region on the Council of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) for the period 2022 – 2025. Ramasedi’s role is to ensure the democratisation and inclusivity of MCM’s supply-chain. With more than 10 years of industry experience; Tirelo has had the privilege of working with some of the most innovative & youthful minds in Botswana, Africa and Globally. A social innovator part of the Botswana Gender Equality & Inclusivity Team, Ramasedi founded the Mmabontle Circle, an initiative to close the gender and leadership gap in the Technology sector in Botswana. Through various roles in academia, private & public sectors, Ramasedi has contributed significantly to the establishment and successful implementation of key national and regional entrepreneurship development programmes in the technological innovation space, indigenous knowledge systems and the biosciences to name a few. Some notable organisations that she has worked with through various initiatives include Government of Botswana, NEPAD SanBio, Google, Microsoft and DeBeers.

Helene Schiffbänker

She has been involved in the design of national funding programs to increase the number of female researchers in the business enterprise sector. Helene works in various European research projects that foster equality in research. Her research focus in on gender and innovation, currently she does research on gender bias in research assessment, in particular on the assessment of Gendered Innovation / Gender in Research Content and Innovation (project GRANteD). Another part of her work is on capacity building in research funding organisations (project GENDERACTIONplus) and on studying impacts of gendered innovation policies (project INSPIRE).

Steven Sebbale

Mr. Steven Sebbale is an Economist by training with a specific interest in Policy development and analysis. Currently, Steven serves as the Ag. Assistant Executive Secretary, Gender Lead and Head of the Policy Division at UNCST. Prior to joining UNCST, Steven worked as a Development Analyst and Consultant with UNWOMEN and with UNDP on Gender financing and Gender budgeting. Steven led the development of Gender Local Economic Assessment Tool (GLEAT) and the Guidance Note for conducting gender local assessments in communities. Under the Strengthening Governance of Climate Change Finance Programme (GCCF), Steven supported the UNDP on climate budgeting and gender financing.  More recently, Steven has been lead on the Gender mainstreaming efforts at UNCST, including the roll out of the Gender Equity in Research Alliance (GERA) in Uganda. The Alliance has regional presence and is working with researchers in over twenty universities. Steven is passionate about STI and has conducted empirical research and policy analysis in various aspects of Uganda’s STI system ranging from gender roles in STI, technology achievement, STI for Local Economic Development, STI and Sustainable livelihoods, business process development, vulnerability assessment analysis, technology transfer in nascent systems, market analysis, community hazard mapping, early warning systems, monitoring and evaluation and program impact assessment. Bindu Shrestha

She started her teaching career since 2001 and served as Head of Department, Vice-principal, and associate professor. She was an executive director of Blue Coffee Pvt. Ltd, involved in social awareness programs through constructive events, publishing a monthly magazine of architecture, planning, and environmental issues. Besides, she worked as a planning consultant for the government of Nepal, mainly in policy development. She served as treasurer of the Nepal Engineers’ Association (2013-2016) volunteer work for the engineering profession. She was Hubert Humphrey Fellow at MIT (2017—2018), focusing on urban development, energy planning, and urban management policies. Since 2017, she has been engaged in research activities as researcher and reviewer in various national and international journals including MIT, USA; NTNU, Norway; IIT, Delhi. Currently, she has been involved in the Cosmos College of Management and Technology as Vice-Principal and Associate Professor.

Dorcas Stella Shumba

African Climate and Development Initiative (ACDI), University of Cape Town

Dr Dorcas Stella Shumba is a climate adaptation specialist with over 7 years’ experience integrating gender perspectives into agricultural, energy, and climate change research projects as well as development initiatives. Her research interests overall include, equitable climate resilience, climate adaptation financing and sustainable agriculture and food systems resilience, focusing on rural men and women in Sub-Saharan Africa. Currently, Dr Shumba serves as a Carnegie DEAL Fellow and Postdoctoral Researcher at the African Climate and Development Initiative (ACDI) based at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. Her primary research focus in this role is evaluating the effectiveness of weather index insurance as a climate adaptation strategy for smallholder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa. Additionally, Dr Shumba delves into the gender aspects of the Just Energy Transition within coal-producing countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, examining the shift toward low-carbon economies. Dr Shumba is also a Lecturer in the Department of Development Studies at the Women's University in Africa, Zimbabwe. In this capacity, she imparts her expertise on various subjects, including Gender and Social Change, as well as Gender in Agriculture. Dr Shumba earned her PhD in Development Studies from Massey University in New Zealand.

Kadija Simboro Kiba

Kadija SIMBORO KIBA is passionate about issues related to energy access and women's empowerment.  She is an energy expert with over 8 years of experience in the renewable energy sector in West Africa. She is particularly interested in energy policy, energy planning, monitoring systems and project evaluation in the on and off-grid energy market. She works on several initiatives and programmes for access to productive use of energy as a lever for empowerment of vulnerable people and women’s empowerment.  Kadija currently works at Practical Action as Senior Energy Advisor for the West Africa regional office. Practical Action provides independent and professional technical assistance and advisory with extensive experience in development consulting across sub-Saharan Africa in the areas of energy, climate change, the energy-sustainable agriculture nexus, and disaster risk reduction.

Robert Bright Mawuko Sogbadji

He currently holds the position as the Deputy Director, Power (Nuclear and Renewable Energy) and also the Coordinator, Ghana Nuclear Power Programme. He serves on the Board of Nuclear Power Ghana Ltd and a member of the National Energy Transition Committee.

Patrick Stephenson

Patrick Stephenson is an independent economic and development research consultant, with an interest in the systemic implications of the utilization of public resources for public policy making.
